Avoid DVT On Airline Flights When On Vacations Or Holidays

People who take air flights when they travel on vacations and holidays could be at risk of developing a severe medical problem called DVT, or deep vein thrombosis, which can be life threatening. The following info will cover travel tips on how to prevent this problem from becoming into a serious medical condition when you travel on airline flights.
Commercial air flights tend to cause airline passengers’ blood to thicken and slow down, especially in their lower legs, which can increase the possibility of getting blood clots. The longer the flight, the greater the health risk. DVT (deep vein thrombosis) is caused by a blood clot forming in one of the legs. This is a serious medical emergency. If this dangerous blood clot breaks off, it may migrate to the lungs which can be fatal.
A common misconception is that younger, stronger, and physically fit athletes are less likely to develop deep vein thrombosis. Recent research shows that many people with a slower at rest blood flow, such as athletes, are in reality more at risk than the general population. People that have a history of swollen legs can also be at risk. Other people who are at risk are those that have, or have had, a serious health condition such as heart disease, diabetes, or cancer. Women that are pregnant, or on birth control pills or on hormone replacement therapy, tend to be more prone to deep vein thrombosis. Obesity may also be a factor.
There are two sets of symptoms that relate to deep vein thrombosis that you should be aware of. The milder set of symptoms may start to show during your flight or within the next few days. These symptoms are tenderness, redness, swelling, or cramps in one of your lower legs. Some bruising or swelling can also appear behind one of your knees. The most severe second set of symptoms generally appear two or more days after a blood clot has been formed. These symptoms can include fainting, shortness of breath, painful or rapid breathing, chest pains that can be accompanied by pain in one shoulder, coughing up blood, and fever.
What can contribute to these serious symptoms?
Deep vein thrombosis can occur in your lower legs at anytime when you are sitting in one position for a long period of time without moving. Some research shows that you are at three times the risk of developing this serious medical condition when flying. Driving and traveling by bus or train, or even sitting in your favorite easy chair can also cause it.
How can you, as an airline passenger, prevent this life-threatening condition from happening?
You can help prevent DVT from developing in your legs by increasing your circulation. If you are predisposed to any of the risks above, you may want to book an aisle seat to give you some more room to move and enable you to get up and walk around at anytime without disturbing other passengers.
Some experts suggest you wear loose clothing and avoid wearing tightly fitting slacks and elastic support stockings or socks; move and exercise your legs frequently while sitting; change your sitting position often; not sitting with you legs crossed; walk up and down the aisle every half-hour or so, and drink a sports drink such as Gatorade so you do not become dehydrated.
It is very common for deep vein thrombosis to be misdiagnosed which could be fatal. If you develop any of the above symptoms you must seek medical help immediately. Inform the doctor who is treating you that have just recently flown and you think that it could be a blood clot. If the physician doesn’t believe it is deep vein thrombosis, ask him to order an ultrasound of your leg to be sure. If you are experiencing any chest problems, insist that he or she do a simple and painless blood oxygen measurement on your finger. It only takes a couple of minutes and will prevent a serious misdiagnosis of your condition.

Little Known Miami Tourist Attraction Weighs 1100 Tons

If you are traveling in southern Florida, and you are near the Miami area, you should stop by one of the most interesting tourist attractions that you will ever see.
This place is called the Coral Castle. It was built by one man over a period of 20 years. His name was Edward Leedskalnin. He dedicated his life to creating this 1100 tons structure of coral to a person that he loved who did not love him.
Ed was engaged to be married to a girl by the name of Agnes. He liked to call her his Sweet 16 because he was 26 years old and she was only 16.
On the day before the wedding, Agnes told Ed that she did not want to marry him anymore. Many theories have arisen for her rejection of him. Some say that he was too poor for her standards. Others believe that it was his lack of education having only gone to school up until the fourth grade.
Whatever the reason was, this was a very life changing event for Ed Leedskalnin. It cost him to pack up and leave his hometown in Latvia and journey across the ocean to Canada to start his new life.
It is said to have wandered for many years, working at lumber camps throughout Canada and California. He ended up working on cattle drives which took Edward into Texas.
Those that have seen the Coral Castle in Homestead believe that these very laborious jobs made Ed into a very strong man and allowed him to move the 1100 tons of coral that would eventually be known as the Coral Castle. The story seems to be in contrast to the fact that he developed tuberculosis and nearly died after contracting it.
It only weighed 100 pounds and was a mere 5 foot in height. A realtor in the Florida city area actually helped him recover from tuberculosis. Afterwards, he purchased a single acre of land for $12 and began to make the Coral Castle.
Ed had a very noble idea of what it meant to come to America. He believes that the United States was the land of opportunity and that a person could find their place and become famous by working hard and staying on task. Based upon this belief, and his love for Agnes, he began the construction of the Coral Castle with the coral that was only a few inches under the topsoil of the land that he had purchased.
According to geologists, this area of Florida has coral that goes down several thousand feet. Therefore, Ed had plenty of material to work with and began construction of his coral home including beds, tables, and shares all made out of coral.
One of the mysteries surrounding Ed is that no one ever saw him working. There are a few pictures which show him posing at his site, but no one actually ever saw him lift or move a single piece of coral.
It created many amazing coral pieces including what is called the Polaris telescope. It is a single piece of coral that is so perfectly carved and positioned that you can look through a triangular eyepiece and see the Northstar every night.
Although it is no longer with us, and his secret long forgotten or lost, his megalithic structure continues to be a topic of amazement with those that cannot understand how a 100 pound man with a fourth grade education could have made such an amazing structure.
