Xian Museums Will Explore The Huge Past Of The City

Xian China is full of museums where you can explore very ancient history. All of the Xian museums will give you a look at the culture of the area and some of the exhibits are simply mind boggling. During the Zhou Dynasty around the 11th century Xian was a center of politics and culture. It was most certainly settled way before that. An ancient Banpo village from about 6500 years ago was excavated in 1954 and there were humans living in the area even before that.
The actual date that Xian became a city was around 202 BC. Han Dynasty Emperor Liu Bang made his capital in nearby Changan and in order to get away he built a palace in Xian. In the time of the Sui Dynasty the capital was moved closer to Xian and in fact, the town was made part of the royal palace. You will find modern Xian in Central China near the Qinling Mountains on the south and the Wei River on the borders of the north. Because the history goes back so far this is a haven for many different museums.
This is the home of the museum of the Terracotta Army. In 1974 some village people were drilling wells and came upon some interesting Bronze Age weapons. They knew the historical significance of these relics and called in help. Three pits were uncovered in an otherwise barren area of land and in these pits of about 16300 square meters more than 7000 life sized terracotta warriors with horses were found. A roof was built over the archaeological find in order to protect it and the excavation of the statues began. The excavation continues and you can see it happening right in front of your eyes.
The Shaanxi History Museum is an important museum in Xian City. It is housed in a beautiful Tang dynasty style building. You can see over 2700 art pieces within the doors. There is a permanent exhibition and also temporary exhibitions revolve throughout the year. The history of the region is the main theme of the permanent exhibition. You will see interesting relics from many of the dynasties including ceramics from Neolithic period, bronze age pieces, weapons, statues in gold and photographs from important archaeological digs. Hanyang Tomb is an underground museum that was open in 2006. The exhibits of relics are in glass cases that are easy to view. There was an area in the village where people made ceramics in kilns; there was a cemetery and about 46 houses. You will find over 1000 stone tablets with calligraphy carved into them that were done in the time of the Han and Qing dynasties. This museum is in an old 11th century temple dedicated to Confucius. Some of the tablets are 4000 years old and they progress up to some made during the 20th century. Guides will instruct you on how to make your own calligraphy with paint and brush.
Xian is a very historic place and the history goes back much further than it does in many places. You can visit a Neolithic village or explore the dynasties of China.
