Do you look forward to Christmas? Many of us do, but it’s actually quite a divisive time of the year. It’s absolutely brilliant so long as you actually like meeting up with friends and family that you haven’t seen all that much of.
For others, it’s a needlessly stressful time in which we’re forced to socialise with people we don’t especially like, to a soundtrack of tunes we wish would just go away. Year to year can vary too: one year you’re Jimmy Stewart, the next year you’re the Grinch.
Regardless of how you feel about the season, you may well be using this all as an opportunity to quit the country and its erratic, less than pleasant weather. Warm weather entices the northern hemisphere south – why spend those happy or irritating weeks of Christmas in the cold and damp, after all?
Not that getting away isn’t a gigantic pain when it actually comes to this time of year. Annoyance the first is that the public transport doesn’t stay open. It’s not that we can blame those who work on the system – who wants to be working over Christmas, unless they’re paid very well? – But it is rather unfortunate that just as you want to get away, everyone stops helping you to!
Secondly, there’s the general grief of the December weather. In the last decade, we’ve seen plenty of occasions where European and American airports become entirely non-operational. Planes are stuck on the tarmac thanks to winter blizzards obscuring everything in sight, leaving many passengers inside the terminal for hours and even days at a time.
But if you decide to chance the seasonal chaos, where should you go? Somewhere warm beckons for many couples and singles, but the Caribbean won’t suit everybody.
Families are perhaps best served by going to places that aren’t actually all that warm. Taking the children (whilst still young) to Lapland is something you’ll only get away with for so long. Ko Chang, part of the Trat Province, is about 330 km from Bangkok and is Thailand’s second largest island and the largest in Ko Chang National Park. Tourism in Ko Chang has increased dramatically just in the last few years.

Gatwick airport is London’s second biggest airport. It is the 8th largest (by passenger traffic) airport in Europe, and is one of the top 30 busiest airports in the world. It also has the single busiest runway in the world.
Gatwick recently announced plans to expand their infrastructure with a one billion pound investment aimed at improving the visitor experience in terms of everything from access to aesthetics. Those responsible for running the airport feel that this investment will allow them to match, or even surpass, Heathrow airport, whose shadow it is has constantly had to exist under, in terms of amenities and passenger accessibility.
Though Gatwick has always been considered a ‘lesser’ airport than Heathrow, this is due to the merits of the latter rather than any shortcomings in the former. Indeed, Gatwick airport has a history that warrants more attention than it is generally given…
#1 – Architectural Advances
Gatwick unveiled the world’s first circular airport terminal (named the ‘Beehive’) in 1936. It was an extraordinary achievement, as it was the first terminal to combine literally every necessary stage of air travel. There was a rail link directly to the terminal, and for the first time passengers could directly board their aircraft instead of having to travel across the runway on foot or by bus.

Gatwick was not originally build to be a public airport. In its early years, it was used as a home for a private flying club. Then, thirty years later, the Queen and Prince Phillip were also present for the opening of the new North Terminal as well.

The second World War saw Gatwick become primarily a military airport, to aid Britain with its air to air combat against the deadly German air-force.
