Cape Winelands Tour

There is a problem for visitors who enjoy wine and wine tasting when they arrive in Cape Town. The problem is that of choice. The Winelands tour is so immense they may not know where to start if they are not accompanied by an expert.

International award winning wines are created year in and year out in the main wine producing regions within the Cape. Large as well as the smaller farms are able to compete with their international counterparts. Names such as Lanzerac, Nederberg and Constantia are just a few of the labels that appear and can boast their successful accolades.

Three distinct areas in the region generate amongst some of the finest wines in the world; these are the Klein Karoo, the Breede River valley and the Coastal region. The Coastal region comprises Paarl, Constantia and Stellenbosch. Groot Constantia founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, is regarded as the mother of all Cape vineyards. This active internationally recognised award winning farm is a national treasure and is under government protection.

Stellenbosch is probably the most visited area of all the regions in the Cape. It is named after one of the Dutch governors of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. Stellenbosch University is also situated here and is also regarded as a student town as the campus stretches throughout the town. KWV [Koperatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika Beperkt] is head quartered here and is the organisation that brings all the producers together to collaborate to ensure quality products are manufactured in the region at high international standards.

Stellenbosch and its neighbouring towns are the sites of a number of festivals which have come to host international visitors besides the regular farm stalls and markets that are open to the public. Some of these festivals have gained international recognition and attracts distinguished buyers and critics of wine especially when auctions are held.

Amazing wines, beautiful farms, vibrant vineyards and spectacular views are but a few of the splendid sights to see and take in during a wine tour of the Cape. Without the welcoming and dynamic people that look after it – it would not be the same.
