Batik – what is it? Actually, most of us have seen it but just did not know what its called. Its a cloth material that is patterned using dying techniques. Often you will see batik as wall hangs, as garments on men and women – particularly Indonesians and Malaysians, as table or chair “throws” as light rugs on floors and batik can be used in other ways too.
Javanese batik which are based upon religion and cultural beliefs, use three main colours – dark brown, indigo and white. Fairly basic colours really but this is because when batik was originally made the dyes were all natural products, thus were very limited in colour. Rank of an individual and social standing are implicated by the batik design.
Javanese batik designs and colours are different from any other part of Indonesia or any other part of the world due to the motifs and patterns being used to reflect specific cultures and specific religious beliefs. In the north of Java, as an example, the batik tends to be more brightly coloured and different dyes are used in the making. This is to signify the variety of different cultures that have been a part of northern Javanese life over the centuries, to include Chinese, Arabic, Dutch and Javanese.

Angkor Wat Tells Stories Of The Glorious Past

Cambodia’s ancestry has Indian roots and royal lineages both from the Kings and Queens of the Somavamsa as well as the Suryavamsa. King Jayavarman II declared that he was the universal ruler of the Khmer people in 802, and he even called himself the God king. Many Cambodian rulers claimed that higher powers chose and guided them.
The Khmer empire in those days covered much more than Cambodia of today, and included Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Burma and other places. The region of the Empire later came to be known as Angkor, with hundreds of beautiful temples. These enchanting structures were once part of a larger social structure that consisted of wooden houses, palaces and other places.
The Khmer Emperor Suryavarman II, who reigned during AD 1113-50 built the Angkor Wat temple. It was one of the many temples that came up when the Khmer civilization was enjoying the height of its power. This temple has earned the distinction of being one of mankind’s most impressive and enduring architectural achievements.
Lord Vishnu is the main deity; however, the sculptures on the temple also pay homage to several Vedic gods and goddesses including Lord Siva. The Angkor Wat temple is said to have served as an observatory where the rising sun was aligned on the equinox and solstice days with the entrance to the West of the temple, and numerous sighting lines were identified to be able to observe the rising of the sun and moon seasonally.
Angkor Wat is based on the temple mountain idea. It has five big towers rising out of a larger pyramid shaped temple that represents the whole mountain. The same shapes appear over and over again throughout the temple indicating the perfect symmetry and repetition. It is not just a temple, but a small city in itself. There are four galleries surrounding the main temple area and are famous for their detailed art work. The temple architecture leaves many modern architects speechless.
At one point, there was a controversy regarding the art in Angkor Wat. Some Europeans brought out the theory that the temple was built much later than the–th century. The reasoning behind this claim is that the temple’s motifs look very similar to motifs from the Italian Renaissance, suggesting that they were copied from the Europeans. However, it was later proved that these allegations are completely wrong and have no basis. In fact, it was said that the Europeans may have taken the oriental art from Angkor Wat to Europe.
The well-known Divakara Pandita, who lived during 1050-1135, was a priest and was also said to be the chief architect behind the temple. There are several inscriptions on the walls of the temples that sing his praises, as well as the existence of his image at Wat Phu. The temple was designed along the lines of astronomy, as revealed in the puranas. All these nuances make Angkor Wat what it is today – the greatest architectural genius of all times and continues to amaze people to this day.
