Kenya Safari Travel: Nairobi National Park

Its interesting to know that the Nairobi National park is the only park in the world that borders a major city. This amazing Savannah bio network is located 7 km away from the city center and is run and maintained by the Kenya Wildlife Services. The parks’ size is about 117km2 and has a total of 7 gates through which tourists can access it. This park is very convenient for those visitors who are on transit and would want the see the kind of wild animals found in Kenya. Its also interesting to note that one can view the city skyscrapers within the park itself.
Nairobi National Park was founded in 1946 by a man by the name of Mervyn Cowie. The park is home to many different animal species including 400 bird species. Of the “Big Five”, its only the mighty elephant that is missing here. Some of the wild animals that one can see here include hyenas, buffaloes, warthogs, elands, baboons among other animal species. The park has open grass plains and different types of flora and fauna.
The Athi Kapiti plains is located on the Southern side of Nairobi National Park including Kitengela which form the migratory routes during the rainy season in this area. We also have the Mbagathi River that demarcates to the Southern Boundary. To the western side of the park we have a highland dry forest that has a permanent river that runs through it. There has been an increase of dams and this has naturally led to an increase in aquatic as well as bird life. We also have a walking trail where visitors can observe hippos as they sleep in the sun.
There is also a sanctuary called the Dave Sheldrick that was launched in 1963 and is home to orphaned baby rhinos and elephants. Visitors to this place are able to interact with the young animals and even get to feed them! The sanctuary serves as a restocking hub for replenishing the reducing number of white and black rhinos.
For environmentalists, the Nairobi Safari walk allows them to appreciate Kenya’s diverse flora and fauna. The walk showcases three ecosystems the Savannah, forests and wetlands. Visitors get to walk on a raised wooden boardwalk that meanders through the 27 acreage safari walk while observing nature’s magnificent animals and plants exist symbiotically.
The park gained international attention in 1989 when the then President Moi burnt 12 tonnes of ivory to sensitize the world on the importance of halting ivory trade that encouraged poaching. Poaching had decimated Kenya’s elephant population to 17,000 from the initial 65,000 recorded in the seventies. To this day, there is an ivory burning site monument that commemorates that event.
Visitors to this park can also engage in other activities including team building, bush dinners, TV and Film production as well as picnicking. There is also the rustic Rangers Restaurant that overlooks the park which allows visitors to enjoy the awesome views as they wine and dine.
The park has Wildlife Conservation Education Center equipped with videos where lectures are offered.
