These gardens are now regarded as the cradle of Queensland horticulture.
Eight floods came through the City Botanic Gardens, from 1870 to 1974, damaging valuable plant collections. Afterward it council looked into a flood free site and choose at Mt. Coot-tha, an open woodland site, five kilometers from the city center. The project began in 1970 and in January 1976 the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, were opened to the public.
There are now numerous plants located int he garden each arranged according to theme and geographical area, with almost half of the area is occupied by native plants. A visitor can enjoy educational and research programs, a reference and lending library, and the Queensland State Herbarium.
With a multitude of picturesque and shaded areas, the gardens are a popular place for picnics.
