Popular Sport Games In Ireland

Maintaining a country’s culture has many steps involved in it and such steps have to be followed carefully and with conviction from everyone. Sports, being one of the pillars of cultural heritage, should be made healthy by selecting the most talented in each field and by using their skills in those fields. There may be vast categories in sports and there may be fans for all of them in a country; however, the sports which have been either created or developed in a country’s history should be revived and taken good care of, to help the pillar to remain strong and sturdy.

Ireland has not been able to divert the attention to sports in the past decades because the numerous riots and conflicts between them and the Englishmen in the eighteenth century and amongst themselves in the last century. However, they have been able to fund and revive most of their ancient sports and activities in the most vigorous display of talents by native players. Sports is now being considered as a huge contributor to the culture of Ireland and many of the sports academies in Irish grounds enjoy benefits beyond imagination at present times.

The board for sports development in Ireland has been able to select the most talented players in almost all kinds of sports activities in Ireland and this will enable them to win a lot of leagues and tournaments, thereby earning a special status in the near future of sports for their country. It has been discovered that the participation rate of Irish people in sports are very high in Ireland whereas, the rate has dipped rapidly in the western countries, due to popularity in other activities like television and playing in computer game consoles.

Ireland has been able to accommodate a vast selection of sports, of which the most popular and supported ones are Gaelic football, Hurling, Soccer and Rugby. More than a quarter of Ireland’s population has started support the Gaelic football and this shows their enthusiasm in team work and cooperation. The Irishmen have shown great talent in other sports mentioned above as well but their primary focus is the Gaelic football because it is their national sport.

Research conducted on sports activities has been getting the highest responses about people’s participation in sports and the reports have concluded that Swimming, golf, aerobics, soccer, cycling, Gaelic football and billiards/snooker are always under the supported category in almost every month of the year. Athletes are also greatly enthusiastic in winning for their country, because they will be given the status of national heroes in Ireland.

Other sport activities in Ireland comprises of horse racing, show jumping, Tennis, Greyhound racing, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Fishing, Handball, Kendo, Hockey, Motors-port and Boxing. They get attention much less than the others but it is amazing how a small Island can feature so many types of sports activities. This has made many heads of other countries turn with awe and envy towards Ireland and her importance to both men and women is in equal proportions, in almost all of her sports activities.

Modern Classic Pinball Machines: Bally’s Cirqus Voltaire

Though there’s been a lot of consolidation in the pinball industry in recent years, the quality of modern games keeps improving. This is due, in part, to improvements in technology–though not at the expense of first rate playfield design. Pinball went through a few lean years during the early years of the video boom, when designers tried to cram as much stuff onto the playfield as possible, perhaps feeling the clutter was needed to replicate the video game experience. In recent years, however, designers appear to have concluded–and rightly so–that pinball cannot be a video game, nor should it want to be.

A great game of recent vintage is the 1997 Bally release “Cirqus Voltaire”. The theme is sort of a ‘Cirque du Soleil” on acid, and the iconography of the circus that they cram into the design and play of the game is amazing. The ultimate object of the game is to “join the cirqus”, which, of course, is a classical American archetype of freedom and escape. Yet this “Cirqus” is not a Norman Rockwell vision of juvenile fun–there are a lot of sinister undertones as well, including evil ringmasters and an almost palpable feeling of sleaze. The clowns here have more in common with the Simpsons’ ‘Krusty the Clown’ than with Emmett Kelly.

The game play offers a lot of what we’ve come to expect from Williams/Bally, with sweeping ramp shots, clever uses of time-worn features (like the disappearing pop bumper, reincarnated here as a balloon. This feature dates back to the 1950′s and appeared on Williams “Gusher” among others), and multi-ball a-plenty. As is very common with pinball games today, the game’s ultimate object is to work your way through a variety of ‘modes’. Sometimes this is a confusing endeavor, but here is very easy to understand–yet still very challenging to the player.

At its nadir, pinball companies were cranking out games featuring themes and subjects that offered little, if any, synergy with game play. The low point might have been some of the celebrity tie-in games of the early eighties (which gave the world debacles like a Dolly Parton and Roy Clark tie-in). “Cirqus Voltaire” on the other hand is an almost perfect synergy of subject and gameplay experience.

The really great thing about the game is the multiple levels of contextual awareness it offers. It alternately provides a celebration and condemnation of the circus and, deeper still, of the popular culture that spawns embraces them. This is not a new notion for a pinball machine to offer different levels of interpretation of seemingly innocuous events (it dates back to the pioneering artist Roy Parker, if not before) but in recent years it may not have been done more deftly than in Cirqus Voltaire.

Picnic Dos and Don’ts

Who says that being on a picnic means you can do whatever you want? Well, if it were that way, then it would be too scary to go on a picnic because anything can happen because there are no rules to follow. People can just walk up to your picnic spot and hijack your basket which can be very dangerous, too. I shudder to think what could happen. So before anything bad happens to your supposedly relaxing and stress-free picnic, there are some picnic etiquettes that you must adhere to in order to coexist with other picnic goers and with your surroundings as well.

There are picnic groves that have several picnic tables that strangers will be able to share. Please don’t come up to somebody else’s picnic and feel too comfy. You do not know what these people are there for and they might not like it if anyone gatecrashes to their picnic.

Another common thing that happens in a really fun picnic with a lot of available food on the table is the famous Food fight. This is very common in school cafeterias but then it can happen in picnics too since they are by themselves. Don’t start, encourage or get involved in a food fight. Aside from all the trash that you will be leaving behind, you will be attracting a lot of bugs such as ants and bees that could harm you once they smell food on you.

Yet another thing to watch is your music volume. Don’t play your stereo too loud. You will not only disturb other picnic goers, but you might irritate the animals around you. You don’t want a bear or other untamed creatures to come over to your picnic just due to the fact they heard your loud music.

Talking about bears, do not feed the creatures, specifically bears. They could be cute and cuddly, but then again you do not know whenever they might immediately turn wild. For persons who bring their dogs along on a picnic, don’t let your dogs out without a leash simply because they might harm or destroy other people’s picnic and you will probably be held accountable for it.

Also, help to make sure you clean up your dog’s droppings and make sure to dispose it correctly. That applies to all your trash at the same time. Keep all your trash in a bag that you could bring to avoid a pile up of trash in the picnic site.

And on your way home, do not drink alcoholic beverages knowing that you are going to be driving home. Mishaps happen anytime and everywhere so refrain from drinking alcohol in a picnic. There are several more things that you must avoid in order to make your picnic safe and hassle free. The list goes on and on. Diverse strokes for various folks. In the end, the success of your picnic will all depend on how well you behave like a responsible picnic-goer.

Finally, there are several things you can do without limiting yourself from doing. Have fun, fun and more fun! Do bring a good camera to capture your precious moments, bring lots of healthy and good food for everyone to enjoy and have some more fun under the sun.

Taking Full Advantage Of Cafe World Gifts

If you have ever played any of the social networking games currently available, you will have noticed that giving gifts to your neighbors and receiving gifts is a widespread practice to most of them. Generally, these gifts are the same items that can be found in the game store, of course the major difference being that they are free.

In Caf World on the other hand things are unlike the gifts that you give and receive. And if you aren’t to sure about it now read on and you will see how they can be more significant to your success than in most games.

The Unpurchaseables – Currently, the things that are available give and receive as Caf World gifts are not available in the store or any other way for that matter. For that reason alone gives you a distinct advantage when you receive them. These gifts include things such as appetizers, cookies, and drinks. When they are served to you customers they will pay you extra coins.

This is the reason Caf World neighbors can have a greater amount of importance over some of the other social networking games. Also, since each of your neighbors will only be able to hand out a limited number of gifts each day means that you will need a good number of neighbors if you wish to receive a large number of gifts each day.

2 Way Street – Just as you are looking for gifts to help you through the game so are your Caf World neighbors. This means you need to take the time to hand out gifts if you want to receive gifts. Who do you think your neighbors will think about when handing out gifts?

Getting Full Benefit – The quantity of coins you receive from each Caf World Gift will depend greatly on when you choose to use them. For example, take the chocolate chunk cookie that provides 5 coins per client. Since those clients must be seated in you caf when the gift is used for you to get your bonus you will want to have a full house. If you only have 4 clients you will only get 20 coins. Wait until you have 10 clients and you will more than double your proceeds to 50 coins with the exact same gift.

Considering Caf World Gifts are not required means how important you make neighbors and gift giving is entirely up to you. Just remember these tips and with a little effort you can be in complete control of your gift success.

What Is The History Of The Rugby World Cup?

Rugby is one of the most popular sports played throughout the Commonwealth countries along with cricket. In particular, the sport is most popular as a national game in New Zealand, and Wales. New Zealand have traditionally been the best team in the world and only during short periods as their dominance being overturned by other teams. Every four years since 1987, there has been a Rugby World Cup where the best teams come together to compete for the Webb Ellis Trophy to find out who is the greatest team in the world.

The first World Cup was held in 1987 and was hosted by the juggernauts of rugby in Australia and New Zealand. Since this time, there have been for additional tournaments, each one held at intervals or four years. In 1987 New Zealand became the inaugural winners of the World Cup, beating France in the final by 29 points to 9.

Four years later the Rugby world cup came to Europe and was hosted by Great Britain throughout different stadiums in England, Ireland, and also France across the pond. For this tournament, a qualifying tournament was used to decide the final lineup of the 32 teams that were to compete. Four years ago it had been an invite only tournament, but now some of the lesser-known countries had to go through qualifying periods in order to make sure they got into the tournament.

On this occasion in 1991, the cup was won by Australia, keeping the heritage of rugby are firmly set down in the southern hemisphere. The hosts England were beaten at home by 12 points to 6 at the home of rugby at Twickenham.

Four years later, the cup was first held in South Africa and this became the first time that every single match was to be played in a single country. It was also the first time that South Africa had played in the tournament, as the end of the boycott against them in world sports came about due to the end of apartheid.

In one of the greatest stories in the history of the game, South Africa ended up coming out of the blue as underdogs and one against the most dominant team in the world of New Zealand in the final but is widely regarded as one of the greatest rugby matches of all. Nelson Mandela was there to see the captain of the team Francois Pienaar lift the trophy above his head in a great symbolic moment in the country’s history.

In 1999 the World Cup was hosted primarily by Wales at matches were also played throughout the countries of the five Nations. At this World Cup one of the biggest upsets in the history of the game took place as one of the home European Nations France defeated the all Blacks by a relatively heavy margin in the final. However they were to be overturned by Australia in the final by 35 points to 12 in a fairly one-sided affair.

This became the first time that any team had won the tournament twice, and it was starting to be a concern that all of the World Cup’s had been won by teams from the southern hemisphere. However 2003 was to change all of that, and England led by Martin Johnson, and with the trusty left boot of Jonny Wilkinson were able to overturn champions Australia in the final.

Most recently, the World Cup has been played in 2007 and was hosted by France. South Africa became only the second team to win the trophy for a second time as they overturned the current champions and relatively unfancied England in the final. In 2011 the competition will be played in New Zealand. Were the best team in the world be able to complete a famous victory on this occasion?

Is Pinball Down For The Count?

For most of the 20th century it seemed that pinball was sort of the ‘cockroach’ of the amusement industry–just too tough and/or too adaptable to kill. It survived wars, economic downturn, moral outrage and most recently video games. Despite the changing cultural climate, it was still a shock when WMS Industries, the dominant player in the industry for the past decade and the maker of Williams and Bally machines, announced that it was getting out of the business several years ago. WMS wasn’t in any sort of financial peril, but rather they wanted to focus on their more lucrative slot machine and video poker business.

Until the 1980′s, pinball dominated the arcade. In the late 1970′s and on the heels of the film adaptation of The Who’s pinball themed rock opera ‘Tommy’ arcades featured row after row of new machines from over a half dozen US based manufacturers. Countless other machines were made worldwide. The first shot of the video game industry didn’t make much of a dent–’Pong’ was revolutionary, but its gameplay was downright dull compared to pinball. It also required two players, another downside in the often solitary isolation of the arcade. The first real challenge to pinball was the second generation of video games, including ‘Space Invaders’ and ‘Asteroids’.

Pinball put up a good fight, and popular games continued to appear through the mid 1980′s. Several pinball games were actually spinoffs of popular video games–”Spy Hunter and Space Invaders and a number of not so good ones based on the Pac Man video games. For awhile, pinball and video games enjoyed an uneasy co-existence, much like Mac and Windows in the computer world.

It was the late 1980s”when video games became more technologically advanced and began to offer superior play experiences”that pinball lost its way. Depending on the manufacturer, they did it in different ways. Gottlieb and others made simple, traditional games that just couldnt compete with their video counterparts. Bally and other manufacturers went the opposite route”by cramming so much onto a playfield that the game hardly resembled traditional pinball. Some of Ballys late 1980s games”with so much playfield gimmickry going on”were nearly unplayable. By this point the video game had taken over the arcade. Some larger arcades continued to offer a few pinball machines to placate hardcores, while some eliminated pinball altogether. In the 1970′s most decent arcades would feature over a dozen machines, with large facilities having several dozen. By the mid 1980′s, it was rare to see more than three or four pinball machines in one location.

As the eighties gave way to the 1990s, however, a funny thing happened. Pinball began to experience a bit of a comeback driven by well designed, enjoyable games that finally got the balance between traditional gameplay and modern technology right. Williams and Bally (whom WMS later acquired), along with Data East, were making the majority of new games and some would become classics. Pin-Bot, Earthshaker The Adams Family and Diner are among my favorites of this era. Williams was at the forefront of the return to excellent design and gameplay, and its hard to think of a Williams game from this period that wasnt a fun game to play, if not a borderline classic. Articles started to appear in the traditional media about the durability and timelessness of pinball, about how the average pinball machine received much more repeat business than the average video game and about the devotion of the pinball player.

With the century drawing to a close, it seemed that the Williams/Bally outfit had found a niche and would be able to grind out pinball machines for the aficionados forever. The final nail in the coffin, however, was a lot of societal changes beyond their control. For one, video games and video arcades became less profitable as companies like Sony and Nintendo were able to transform a lot of the high end gameplay to the home platform. Meanwhile, trends like new urbanism, which saw a return to downtown storefronts and the growth of online shopping combined to hurt traditional shopping malls. Eventually the WMS corporate braintrust decided to pull the plug on pinball and concentrate on their highly profitable gambling machine business. From a business standpoint, it probably made sense but that didnt make it any easier for lifelong pinball enthusiasts to reconcile with.

So what now? Stern Pinball is still committed to building new games, and is starting to get some traction both among retail owners and home collectors. Still, it appears that the only hope for pinball players is that some effort will be made to preserve the machines that already exist. With the capital investment required for a new company to get into the business, its hard to envision any new manufacturers popping up.

More Bad Celebrity Themed Pinball Machines

This time we wont rank the bad celebrity pinball machines, well look at several different genres of bad celebrity tie ins:

THE BOX OFFICE BOMB THEMED MACHINE:

In 1991 Williams Pinball released a machine based on Terminator 2. It had a gun trigger to launch the ball and a ton of Arnolds catch phrases like Ill be back keyed to various game objectives. The film was a huge hit, and everything worked well together. Now the bad news: because of the success of this machine the production companies thought Hmm. What well do is release the pinball machine simultaneously with the film.

Unfortunately, this thinking led to a number of pinball machines based on films that were absolute bombs. Some examples of this genre are machines based on The Last Action Hero and Hook. There wasnt a cooler cartoon than The Flintstones. So how do you screw up a Flintstones pinball machine? Just base the theme not on the classic Hanna Barbara cartoon, but on the horrible film starring John Goodman and Rosie ODonnell.

My two favorites are The Shadow which is hilarious because Alec Baldwin is on the backglass and Waterworld. Waterworld was released in 1995 starring Kevin Costner and quickly became the definitive big budget, no box office film replacing Michael Ciminos Heavens Gate and the Dustin Hoffman/Warren Beatty comedy Ishtar.

Playing a bomb themed pinball machine is downright surreal. The most pitiful thing is when the machine booms out a catch phrase from the film that no one is familiar with.

THE DUBIOUSLY TIMED THEME:

In this genre I include themes that would have been pretty cool, except for the fact they were released well after the subjects popularity had begun to ebb. Gilligans Island would have been great back in the mid-1960s or even in the late 70s when a new generation discovered the show in syndication. In 1991 it was just creepy since nearly half of the cast members depicted on the backglass were dead. The Six Million Dollar Man was released in the fall of 1978, just in time for the shows cancellation. Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry would have been a perfect fit for a pinball theme, except that its 1995 release came 8 years after the debut of the last film in the series (The Dead Pool). Popeye Saves the Earth was released 15 years after the release of the Robert Altman film.

Undoubtedly the strangest machine of this genre is 1994s Mario Andretti. The backglass didn’t display a picture of a young Andretti at the height of his racing career, but rather an image of grizzled old Mario Andretti. The smart move would have been to use his name, throw a bunch of race cars on the backglass and playfield and call it a day. Instead having the sixty-something race car driver on the backglass is vaguely akin to having your grandfather looking over your shoulder while you play.

ROOT,ROOT, ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM:

A comment on the original celebrity theme article mentioned this genre and it is a good one. Its important to understand that the pinball industry has been based in Chicago for most of its history. Presumably for that reason there have been some machines featuring the local sports teams and stars. The Big Hurt Frank Thomas was a solid major league ballplayer, but not really worthy of a pinball machine themed around him. The most egregious example of this was 1978s Bobby Orrs Power Play, released not long after the trade that sent Orr from Boston to Chicago. Nationally, no one outside of Boston and Chicago cared.

THE BAD CONVERSION FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

This requires a little bit of an explanation: for reasons that Ive never been quite clear on it was common practice to rebrand a perfectly good game for the International market. Sometimes it was released by the US company, other times it was licensed to a foreign operation. Youd think that there would be some creative control over the rebranded themes. Youd be wrong.

While I have a good grasp on the US pinball demographic I have no idea who plays pinball internationally. Based on some of the re-themed machines its probably better I dont know. Mata Hari was a classic machine of the early 1980s. The German release was rethemed as the more foreboding Lady Death. This one at least makes sense as they had some Nazi imagery that Germans are understandably sensitive about (despite being historically inaccurate, since the real Mata Hari was executed during WW I). Less understandable is the retheming of a military themed game called Special Force in the US to the downright bizarre Special Forces Girls, featuring comely women in low cut, cleavage baring fatigues.

NFL Preseason Handicapping Basics

Betting preseason NFL games never fails to elicit an irreconcilable difference of opinion among sports betting enthusiasts. Some consider it a very poor wagering opportunity, while others maintain that there’s no better moneymaking opportunity in sports than pro football’s preseason. The truth is probably somewhere between the two extremes–NFL preseason betting must be approached with caution and discipline, but offers the potential to make a tidy profit before the regular season kicks off.

First, let’s examine the case against preseason NFL wagering. Clearly the biggest argument against it is the simple fact that the games don’t count. Though spots will exist during regular season games when the motivation and preparation of individual teams may vary, in theory both teams want to win. That’s not always the case in preseason football, since different coaches have different goals. Some might want to just evaluate their personnel, others might want to establish a winning attitude, and all coaches want to keep their stars from getting injured. Factor in all of the variables and conflicting agendas, the preseason naysayer would argue, and there are just too many unknowns to consider taking a financial position on.

But like the old saying goes “every dark cloud has a silver lining”. And the divergent agendas at play in preseason football can be seen as precisely why it is a good wagering opportunity. For example, say the Superbowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers are set to play an ‘also ran’ team like the Houston Texans. By regular season standards, the Steelers would almost certainly be favored. In the preseason, however, they’ll often have a different agenda for the individual game. A “better” team has more concern about protecting key players. and usually has fewer personnel decisions to deal with. They don’t need to worry about implementing coaching changes, or creating ‘team chemistry’. As a result, ‘better’ teams frequently approach preseason games as a mere annoyance.

NFL ‘doormats’, meanwhile, have a markedly different agenda to their more successful counterparts. They’ve often got heated competition for starting positions or key back up roles. They’ve often got new coaching staffs that players want to impress. Most significantly, they’re in great need of establishing a winning attitude. A win against an elite team in a ‘meaningless’ preseason game often has a much greater value to this type of team than to a playoff contender.

Even among teams that don’t worry much about wins and losses during the preseason, they don’t want to go into the season losing them all. For that reason, one of the most successful preseason situations over the past decade and a half have been teams that lost their first two preseason affairs. During that span, 0-2 teams have hit right around 60% against the spread.

There may be no greater determining factor of a team’s preseason success than the philosophy of their head coach. Some coaches just don’t like to lose *any* game, and usually these hyper-competitive teams are good preseason bets. Bill Parcells, for example, was legendary for his serious approach to preseason games. The coaches that he mentored like the NY Giants’ Tom Coughlin have to some extent carried on this legacy. While the “good” preseason coaches are often reflected in the pointspreads assigned to their team, a motivated team is almost always worth a look.

The smart preseason handicapper makes use of the Internet, and more specifically uses it to follow the local sports media of NFL teams. During NFL preseasons, teams’ beat writers are anxious to write stories and need to fill articles but have little in the way of “real” news to write about. As a result, a handicapper can frequently find valuable details like a coach’s goals for the game, playing time for key players, and specific strategies that will be implemented. Occasionally, coaches will come out and say that they’re more interested in evaluating certain players for certain positions than they are in the outcome of the game. A thorough evaluation of this type of media coverage can often produce not only teams to play “on”, but teams with priorities other than winning to play “against”.

In conclusion, there are certainly strong opportunities for profit in NFL preseason wagering but its essential to understand that it cannot be approached in the same manner as the regular season. And, as always, its important to remember that there will be more strong opportunities down the road and that discipline and rigor in handicapping is just as crucial in the preseason NFL as it is at any other time of the year.
