Northern California is home to some of the best golf courses in the world. This really is more the case than anything within the Monterey Peninsula, which happens to possess four of the top seven golf courses in the upper area of the state. While some of the courses can be fairly pricey, like Pebble Beach and Spyglass, others are quite inexpensive for the standard golfer. The regal course is located directly on the shoreline and offers stunning views of Carmel Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
Designed in 1919 by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, Pebble Beach has hosted the U.S. Open 5 different times in 1972, 1982, 1992, 2000 and 2010.
2. Spyglass Hill Golf Course – Pebble Beach, CA
Spyglass, nicknamed “the Glass,” was designed by the widely known Robert Trent Jones, Sr. in 1966 and has stunning views of the Pacific Ocean on its first five holes. This is the 2nd of 4 courses on this list situated on the Moneterey Peninsual.
The course is so widely recognized for its amazing design and style and beauty, that Golf Digest ranked it Fifth on “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.” Spyglass is also among the courses in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am rotation.
3. Poppy Hills – Pebble Beach, CA
This tree-lined golf course is the third course listed in my selection of the 7 very best golf courses in northern California based in the Pebble Beach region. Even though it does not have the ocean views of some of it’s Monterey Peninsual counterparts, it’s tree-lined fairways set the scene for this exceptionally developed course.
With it’s large number of dog-leg fairways, Poppy Hills was graded among the finest courses in northern California as well as in the top 20 courses in all of California.
4. Coyote Creek Golf Club – San Jose, CA
The Coyote Creek Golf Club is the only Jack Nicklaus signature golf course within the bay area and is the most well-liked place to play for all of the regional sports celebrities from teams like the 49′ers and Giants. Its flawless style and excellent layout was acknowledged in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” and was presented a rating of 4.5 stars.
5. TPC Harding – San Francisco, CA
After a very long stint of not being a major course and some necessary redevelopment, TPC Harding is yet again a PGA Tour Tournament Players Club course. Harding Park is the most recognized golfing location within the San Francisco city limits and is very affordable to San Francisco and Bay Area inhabitants.
The course was opened up in 1925 and was home to the 2009 Presidential Cup and also the 2010/2011 Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
6. Winchester Country Club – Meadow Vista, CA
Tucked away in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada’s in Meadow Vista, this exlcusive Championship northern California golf course was the final course developed by the renowned father-son duo of Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Jr. The course was considered to be The Best Residential Golf Course in America by Golf Weekly.
7. Monterey Pines Golf Course – Monterey, CA
The last choice in my list of the 7 best golf courses in northern California is also the fourth course found in the Monterey area. Monterey Pines was originally developed as a 9-hole course by Robert Muir Graves in 1963. The back 9 was added in 1972 and the course was redesigned during 2009 by Marc Messier.
Nicknamed the “Navy Course,” Monterey Pines is taken care of and managed by the Navy Golf Program. This course is the excellent golfing destination for beginning golfers and experienced golfers alike. It is hard enough to work on your game and enjoyable enough to enjoy a full round of 18.
There are many excellent golfing opportunities in northern California, and the above mentioned are some of the finest. Whether you’re a dedicated golfer, or somebody that just loves getting out there and hitting the links, these courses provide a wonderful experience.

Golf Holidays In Portugal – Best Places To Go

Portugal is widely regarded as the hidden gem of European golf. Many holiday golfers are distracted away to Spain’s rich tradition in golfing and its championship courses while others visit the British Isles for the original Links golf experience.
However, Portugal has grown in popularity over recent decades due to its ample choice of courses, year round good weather and range of accommodation.
The main golfing holiday regions are centered on the Lisbon region in the south west, the Algarve region in the south, the island of Madeira and the Oeste region.
Lisbon and the Estoril coast region offers the fullest range of accommodation price-wise, combined with the wonderful backdrop of the Sintra mountain range. Combine this with an array of dining options that you’d expect from a modern European capital.
The Algarve region, on the south coast of Portugal, offers the broadest range of courses to play and for many is the ideal base for a golf vacation. The western part faces onto the Atlantic Ocean so provides some great links courses to challenge any golfer (such as the Boavista golf club and the scenic hillside Parque Da Floresta course).
The central area hosts Vilamoura, a range of top-class courses, plush hotels and holiday resorts. The Oceanico golf clubs are highlights of the area especially the Old Course which is a ‘must-play’ course to this area. To the east, the climate becomes a little cooler and the courses become a little more elite and pricey with the Jack Nicklaus designed Monte Rei being the jewel of the area.
Getting to the island of Madeiramay discourage some visitors due to the need to get connecting flights from mainland Europe (a five hundred kilometer flight off the south west coast of Portugal). However, this picturesque paradise island can provide a golfing holiday with a difference.
The islands 3 clubs are all located in stunning hillside locations with steep cliffs marking out-of-bounds on a number of holes and it is this rugged scenery that shapes the architectural design of each course. If you want to play a broad range of golf then Madeira may not be the place for you. However, if you only intend playing a little golf in unique surroundings then this island could suit you.
Finally, the Oeste region marks a more recent golfing area which doesn’t yet boast the range of golf seen elsewhere, but what it lacks in championship clubs it makes up for in tranquil scenic countryside and charming villages. Of all the regions it is also the one place where a number of new courses are springing up with future developments expected in Sizandro Village, Vimeiro, Paimogo, Falsia del Rey and the Rainha Golf and Spa.
On the subject of green fees, the cost can vary widely across the country. Expect to pay a minimum of 50 Euro for a regular quality course in low season and around 80 to 90 Euro during the high season (July & August).
All courses can be booked online and its generally good practice to make advance bookings in the summer season. Remember to bring your PGA handicap proof as some championship courses have a maximum-handicap rule for all visitors (confirm via their websites).

Golf Holidays – Things To Prepare Before Departure

For the golfer going on holidays, there are a couple of items they should check before setting off to make sure they get to enjoy as much golfing as possible while on holiday. The following checklist covers some of the essentials.
Health: A basic first aid pack should be included in your suitcase. If you plan to golf most days then any minor injuries can build up over a few days (especially if they don’t get a chance to heal) so pack headache tablets, plasters, insect repellent, indigestion pills, diarrhoea medication, sun block/sun-screen, contact lenses (and spare ones), spectacles and travel sickness tablets. Also include any prescription medicine that your are currently taking (bring enough to cover your stay but not so much as to cause concern to border control/customs).
Most of these could be picked up on arrival but doing that would eat into your holiday time. A worthy addition is heat packs and cold packs as the muscle strain involved in golfing daily may prove more than your body can take.
Bookings: Email or phone the courses you intend playing to confirm your tee-time is booked. Make a note of any booking references you may need along with tee-times and a map/directions to the course (especially if you are renting a car).
Clothing and Shoes: Have a look at the golf course’s websites and confirm if there are dress codes. Most holiday resorts are quite flexible on this matter but if you are playing championship courses then there could be specific dress codes (for on-course and/or in the clubhouse). Aim to bring several layers of clothing with you. This means you can easily add/remove layers depending on how cold/hot the destination is. It also means you have plenty of spare clothing if you are rained on.
Pack sunglasses, caps and beanies. Check your rain gear is packed and in a good state of repair. Inspect the cleats on your shoes replacing any broken ones. Cleats near the toe are especially important for maintaining grip under foot so you could rotate broken cleats to the heel if desired. Clean the shoe soles of all soil/grass (see below).
Documentation: Check the club websites you are visiting for any dress codes they may have (some of the bigger courses will have codes, especially in the club house). Pack your PGA handicap if you are playing courses with a minimum handicap rule. Prepare any course information regarding tips on how to play the course, out-of-bounds, etc.
Golf Clubs and Equipment: Inspect & count your clubs. Clean them and the bag of any soil. Some destinations (Ireland, U.K., Australia) have policies regarding the dangers of bringing potentially contaminated soil into a country.
Then there is the regular golf paraphernalia to stock up on. Check you have plenty of pencils, tees, golf balls and gloves.

What is it like playing in a 27-hole golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus? You wouldnt know unless you have played at the Breckenridge Golf Club in Summit County. The championship course started in 1985 with 18 holes. After it proved to be successful, the town decided to add nine holes, still designed by Jack Nicklaus. The new 9-hole course is called The Elks Nine and its players enjoy the highest part of the Breckenridge Golf Club as well as a very good view of the magnificent mountains and the elks.
The Honors
That Breckenridge Golf Club is the foremost golf course to visit whenever you are in Colorado is supported by the ratings, recognitions that it gets from both national and local organizations. For example, it was recognized twice by Colorado Golfer- as Best Mountain Course then as Toughest Mountain Course. Another publication, Golf Digest gave it 4-1/2 stars in its Places to Play guide, and identified it as one of the countrys Upscale Places to Play.

The High-Altitude Game
So, what impresses the visitors about this golf course aside from its designer? Maybe you have played in a few other Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses but you should still visit the Breckenridge Golf Club for its unique features. For example, have you played at an elevation of over 9300 feet higher than sea level? There is less air resistance and gravity at that elevation, so your ball will be easier to control than when you are playing at lower altitudes. Playing at The Elk Nine is a good opportunity to set a new record for your game score.

During summer its still cool at higher elevations. You can play for hours and forget that its summer because you dont perspire so much as you walk towards each hole.
