What Should You Expect On A Cruise On The Nile

Aswan is the turnaround point for cruises and now the cruise boat heads back north the 80 miles to Luxor. The journey lasts 2 days with an overnight stop at Edfu just before heading back to Luxor. The week sailing along the River Nile is over and holiday makers return to the airport and home.

The Mayan civilization is often credited as being the first people to use a writing system, realise the concept of zero, use a calendar, understand astronomy and complete pyramidal architecture. The experimentation and insight needed to create these masterpieces certainly demanded an element of science. For example, they made use of the natural elements at hand in a way that could communicate to present and future generations. Berries and soil became colours of paint and ink. Ashes, bark and animal hides became pencil and paper. Bones and sharp stones carved into rock to create eternal images we still see today.
Another aspect of Mayan science at work is in agriculture. Their recognition and development of maize as a base crop and food source is largely responsible for the survival of the civilisation. While the Aztec nations were the first to introduce the use of step gardens near urban dwellings and a highly developed configuration of irrigation, the Maya made use of the concepts. No one in this world can deny the inevitable using any means of explanation; likewise, we have the fact that a country’s popularity will be based on the methods they use to preserve the four most important pillars namely Music, Culture, Colors and Hospitality. Popularity will be achieved only means of improving any of these four important factors listed above and only a few countries have earned their names by improving all of the four qualities. However, the smallest country which has got the privilege of improving all of the four pillars is Ireland.
The Irish have been quite noble in their living which has earned them a large number of praises from other countries. Their methods of respecting the traditions of others have been brought down to the present with the same spirit and effectiveness. Old methods of farming and plantation facilities have not been abandoned even to this very day. They have been proved to give greater efficiency rate than that of the modern methods. However, new methods in managing the fields and special fertilizers have been introduced which are tailor-made to suit the old methods of farming.

Memories Of A Champion: Alexis Arguello

Alexis Arguello, one of the greatest boxers to ever compete, was found dead in his Managua, Nicaragua home in early July of an apparent suicide. He was 57 years old. Arguello was the mayor of Nicaragua’s capital city at the time of his death.
Known for his class outside the ring as much for his tenacity inside the ring, hes best known to casual fight fans for his epic war in’82 with Aaron The Hawk Pryor when he moved up in weight after dominating at lighter weight classes. Ring Magazine not only named it Fight of the Year, but later would dub it Fight of the Decade. Promoter Bob Arum offered these thoughts on Pryor/Arguello:
“It was a brutal, brutal fight. That was something I will never, ever forget as long as I live. That was one of the most memorable fights I ever did.”
While the first Pryor fight may have brought him the most mainstream notoriety, boxing cognoscenti are aware that Arguello is arguably the best lightweight and junior lightweight in the history of the sport. Arguello would end his career with an astounding 82-8 record with 65 knockouts and championships in three different weight classes.
Ironically, Arguellos career didn’t get off to a good start and he lost his debut in’68 via first round TKO. He won his next three fights, before losing again via unanimous decision to another lower tier foe in his native country. After that, he seldom lost again and would go on to be respected as one of the best pound for pound fighters of his day. He was at his best against his toughest adversaries including Ray Mancini, Bobby Chacon and Ruben Olivares. Bob Arum remembered him not only as a great fighter, but as a great man:
“Not only was he one of the greatest fighters I’ve ever seen, he was the most intelligent fighter. He was a ring tactician. Every move was thought out. And he was a wonderful, wonderful person.”
The articulate, intelligent Arguello was also a quote machine on the fight game and how champions should conduct themselves. Here, he speaks of his attitude toward his opponents:
“Of course after the fight you want to make sure that you’re okay and so is the other guy, its a brotherhood in there, so you want to make sure everyone is okay after the war is over.”
Arguello didn’t fight for his first title until he’d had 58 fights, and would frequently admonish boxers who didn’t show the same respect for the sport or their status as champion:
“When you won that title you should know now that you are representing a whole country or nation with your actions and you are now in a glass house or under a microscope and you better be ready to make your people proud.”
Arguello loved boxing and fought to protect it from those who would undermine its greatness:
“I respect boxing because it has given me so much and thats why I will never allow anyone to mistreat the sport of boxing if I can help it.”
While the modest, dignified Arguello would never say it himself, that was for from a one sided debt–he also gave immeasurably to the sport of boxing with his grace, intelligence, talent and toughness.

How can we forget the period of invasion, plundering and insulting incidents for the people of Ireland which is the seventeenth century? People who either survived all the events of that period or those who had heard things about that time from their ancestors will give us a detailed account on those bloody riots and massacres. Small groups of rebels in the Irish lands were brutally crushing under the heels of their English conquerors and this was the opening of a great chapter in the history of Ireland.
In the early parts of the eighteenth century, the English and the Irish had made the Act of Union and this enabled the differences between the two regions to subdue greatly. North and South parts of the Irish lands were facing internal conflicts which were mainly on whether to follow their old customs or to follow new principles in governing the region better.
When the northern part of Ireland prospered immensely with the growth in industrial and manufacturing sectors, the uneven regions of the southern regions prevented optimistic growth in their lives, forcing them to resume their past again. Britain was blamed for all these troubles and they were forced into sending troops to solve these matters at hand. Both the regions suffered again under this newly renewed fight for freedom and prosperity and it brought about the permanent division of the northern and southern regions.
The Catholics wanted complete independence in this division and there was huge political unrest in the Irish lands for a good part of the early twentieth century. In 1920, the Government of Ireland act was passed in an effort to pacify all of the Irish community which however did not serve its purpose well. British forces stationed in the Irish lands had to face countless attacks from the Irish Republican Army or the IRA with the use of guerrilla warfare style.
Then came the era of the legendary treaty of peace in the 1921; the treaty was signed with the agreement of combining six counties under the region of the Northern Ireland and the remaining twenty three counties in the south along with the three counties from Ulster were brought under the region of southern Ireland. The independent republic of Ireland was formed and things seemed to have come under peaceful times from then onwards.
Ireland had to face more problems in the year from 1960 to 1990 in the form of bloody violence between the Catholics and the Protestants in the land. Intensive armed attacks between the Independent Republican Army and the Protestant paramilitary forces broke out, forcing them to seek help from the British troops again to resolve matters. This brought about the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement between the British and the Irish Prime ministers. Following the cease fire from the IRA, the implementation of this treaty was successful in 1994. At last, in 2010, all the governing powers of Irish lands were given back to Ireland, but the echoes of the past still resound once in a while.

Dogs And Temporary Kennels

Are you the type of dog owner who likes to take your companion with you wherever you go? If you are then you know that that there are times when you can do this, but there are also times when you can not, for whatever reason.
On the occasions when that happens, you will usually have to to find a boarding kennels that will take care of your dog while you are away.
A vacation is a time for relaxing, so you do not want to be worrying about your dog, if you can help it. Within your own country, it is not usually a big problem, but if you go abroad, then taking your dog can be more trouble than it is worth. Not only for you, but for your doggy friend too.
If you can not place your dog with someone it knows, like a member of your family or a neighbour, then the only alternative is a boarding kennels.
I have placed my dog in a bad kennel once and I learned a few lessons from that. I placed my Becky in a kennel in a highly regarded village just outside our town. I was happy with what I saw and the sales pitch of the owner, so I went to Spain, thinking that all was fine for both of us. I had a great holiday and went straight to the kennels from the airport on my return, although I had told them a fortnight before that I would pick Becky up the day after my arrival. I just could not wait to see her.
I went to the kennels and they were surprised to see me. Of course, I was a day early. They said that Becky was ‘resting’ and that it would be better to ‘come back tomorrow’. No way! So they took me to see her. I nearly cried. She was sitting in a good sized cage, but on newspaper sodden with pee.
She saw me and just looked down at her paws. I called her name again, but she did not want to know. I paid the bill and put her in the car on the front passenger seat where she always sat. She just looked out the window and showed no interest in me whatsoever.
It took three days before she would speak to me again! The moral of this story is not to be impressed by big adverts or impressive locations as I was. Ask your dog-owning friends, write into the local paper inviting recommendations, phone the local animal protection society or the kennel club or look on the Internet.

Barry, South Wales: Ancient History: Part 3

Barry Castle was owned by William de Barri in the twelfth century, but it was raized to the ground by Llewellyn Bren in 1316. Many believe that the Cavaliers rebuilt and that the Roundheads destroyed it again. Whatever is true, it was never rebuilt again after that.
The Normans were hated by the locals and they had to build large mansions to protect themselves from the frequent attacks carried out on them from the people of the valleys and mountains. During the time of Henry III, there were 12 castles within six miles of Barry. In Glamorgan, there were 30 castles and in south Wales as a whole, 150.
Porthkerry and the church to its west is said to have taken its name from Ceri, who, it is said, founded a port ‘Port Ceri’. It is believed that Ceri ap Caid, the King of Essyllwg, lived in Porthkerry before the Christian era. His bard, Corvinor, is stated to have been the first to have built a ship with sails and a rudder for the race of Cymru. Some believe that Ceri was a nephew or grandson of Caractacus (Caradog) and that he assumed the head of government in south Wales when Caractacus was sent to Rome.
John Wesley preached in the Porthkerry Church and sometimes outside in the churchyard too between 1741 and 1743. Today, there are two very old churches still in use in Barry: St. Cadocs Church in Cadoxton and Merthyr Dyfan Church in Merthyr Dyfan. One-hundred-and-fifty years ago, Cadoxton was the largest village in the Barry area: thus, in 1844 the Parliamentary register contained 25 names: 20 from Cadoxton and five from Barry. The one church was dedicated to St. Cadoc, who had been accustomed to spend Lent on Flat Holm and Barry Island. The village (Cadoc’s Town)took its name from the church, which was founded in 800 AD.
Merthyr Dyfan Church, situated in the north of Barry, was founded in 600 AD and the name means Dyfan The Martyr. There were two saints of this name: one journeyed to Barry to convert the inhabitants to Christianity; the second lived in the Sixth Century and was the son of a Welsh chieftain. His sister was also martyred and the town of Merthyr Tydfil is named after her.
The Christian faith grew very quickly in the Vale of Glamorgan and in the middle of the second century, the Prince of Siluria, Llewrwg, became the first king, of any country in the world in all history, to be baptized into the Christian faith. He sent to Rome for more Chritian teachers and was sent two monks named Dyfan and Fagan. Dyfan was martyred near the church and the Fagan was canonized. St. Fagan’s situated between Barry and Cardiff was named after him.

The indigenous people pay their salutation to the full moon and pray for a good harvest, while other gatherers pray for the country’s prosperity as the festival also coincides with beginning of new fishing season and start of new year.
However, no festival is complete without a feast, and the food for the Water & Moon Festival that marks the celebration is the Ork Ambok. Ork Ambok is a special Cambodian delicacy which is particular to this occasion. The Ork Ambok consists of rice with either coconut or banana juice, which is consumed along with various fruits and vegetables. Not only is the festival, which continues non-stop for three days, a treat for the local participants of the festival, but is equally exciting to those who come to Phnom Penh from around the world for witnessing this amazing spectacle.
