The Bate Hall Hotel has a fascinating history as a place that used to hide away itinerant Catholic priests during the reign of Henry VIII when Catholicism was banned. These priests would travel in disguise and give services, but were hid away in what was known as a priest’s hole to avoid being found in raids by the king’s men. There is a priest’s hole at the Bate Hall Hotel that can still be seen.
At Warrington there is the Barley Mow Inn, which is one of the oldest in the region and was built and opened in 1561. The edifice has some impressive Tudor style architecture and makes a quaint place to stop for a pint and investigate some of the building’s old history.
