Brisbane two botanic gardens, are located in the city and at Mt Coot-tha. Both are maintained by Brisbane City Council. Mt Coot-tha’s botanic gardens, founded in 1970, are acknowledged as Queensland’s premier subtropical botanic gardens. This 52 hectare garden consists of more than 20,000 plants representing approximately 5000 species from around the world.
The City Botanical Gardens, Brisbane’s first botanical gardens, were established in 1855on a riverside site set aside as a botanic reserve in 1828 when Brisbane was first settled. The land initially supplied food for the early penal colony .Later, as a botanic gardens, it trialed crops and other plants from around the world, suitable for growing in the subtropical climate. These gardens are now regarded as the cradle of Queensland horticulture.
Eight floods came through the City Botanic Gardens, from 1870 to 1974, damaging valuable plant collections. Afterward it council looked into a flood free site and choose at Mt. Coot-tha, an open woodland site, five kilometers from the city center. The project began in 1970 and in January 1976 the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, were opened to the public.
There are now numerous plants located int he garden each arranged according to theme and geographical area, with almost half of the area is occupied by native plants. A visitor can enjoy educational and research programs, a reference and lending library, and the Queensland State Herbarium.
With a multitude of picturesque and shaded areas, the gardens are a popular place for picnics. Shelters and seating as well as toilets and drinking fountains, are provided at various locations throughout the gardens. Weddings can be booked here and there are three beautiful locations and there is a Lakeside Restaurant that offers table service and caters for special events. The Brisbane Botanic Gardens are open every day between 8:00am and 5:30 pm and entry is free.

Tamborine Mountain Market is held on the second Sunday of each month at Showground’s on Main Western Road, Mount Tamborine. St. Helena was turned into a penal colony, forty years later, when the mainland prison became overcrowded. The Reforests were cleared for lumber and to prevent escapes, gardens were planted, and houses were built. Prisoners were taught trades and paid for the work they did. In 1933 the last of the inmates left. During it’s 65 year run only 3 prisoners had escaped. Today, you can tour the Island and visit the Deputy Superintendents home, as well as the stone houses that once belonged to the prisoners. These homes have been turned into museums filled with photographs from the prison era.

One of the better known dive sites in the Brisbane area is the collection of 15 vessels at the Tangalooma Wrecks on the western or landward side of Moreton Island where dives range in depth from 2 to 10 meter with an average of about eight meters. The wreck attracts an amazing amount of marine life, including wobbegings, trevally, king fish and lots of tropical fish, they also make excellent drift dive because of the strong currents in the area.
Curtin Artificial Reef is located north of Moreton Bay, and is another popular diving destination. This area is particularly favored by those with intermediate qualifications and has much to see and explore. Since 1968 the underwater Research Group of Queensland has been sinking large vessels, cars, tires and pontoons for divers to explore. Much like Tangalooma Wrecks, there is also a wide range of marine life for you to observe during your dive.
The next dive, that is worth noting, is the Mantra Ray Bommie. The dives in this area are anywhere from five to fifteen meters deep. During your underwater exploration if this area you will get a chance to observe manta ray, leopard sharks, shovel nose rays, and much more.
Other areas that are great for diving fun include: Flinders Reef, Brisbane only true coral reef; Flat Rock, just of of the north east tip of Stradbroke Island. It’s a great place to see turtle, eagle rays reef fish and more. This location is also know as “Shark Alley” since it is most famous for the grey nurse shark that gather in the winter time.
