Visiting The Edinburgh Festival

The Edinburgh Festival is called the largest cultural celebration in the entire world. Its origins are actually tracked back to the late 1940s when the Edinburgh international Festival was initially developed. Each year, the festival has exploded in size and reputation as more men and women coming from around the globe choose to pay a visit to the region and participate in the different festivals. The Edinburgh Festival is actually not just one single celebration but a series of independent festivals all taking place within a 3 to 4 week period of time.

One of the most discussed among these festivals could be the Edinburgh International Book Festival that takes place within the last 3 weeks of August on a yearly basis. It happens in Charlotte Square which is within the middle of Edinburgh. Boasting to be the largest festival of this kind worldwide, this book festival features many political and cultural discussions and debates along with the well-known kid’s program.

Yet another popular Edinburgh Festival is called the Free Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Edinburgh Comedy Festival is another popular choice. For those who enjoy a good laugh, this assortment of comedy performances is a must see.

For your music devotees around the world, the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival is the place to be. For ten days each and every year, people come from around the world to hear the music stylings of numerous prominent artists along the lines of Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis amongst others. Annually, the music artists come from all corners of the globe to perform for a crowd of fired up travelers and locals. In addition, Scottish performers share their skills with the crowd as well. Not surprisingly, the blues is a major component to this event so other performers who have come in past times were names like BB King and Buddy Guy.

Heavy Metal Viking Style: Amon Amarth

One of the most appealing qualities of heavy metal has always been its defiance of popular trends. While other genres of music groveled for ‘crossover appeal’ and mainstream acceptance, heavy metal has always been unapologetic about what it is. In the 1990′s, the plague of ‘nu metal’ struck. ‘Nu Metal’ fused watered down heavy metal riffs with mopey, introspective lyrics more commonly associated with bad ‘adult contemporary’ artists.

Fortunately, the cancerous tumor in the body of heavy metal is now in remission and the tide is turning back. Part of the cure has blown across the Norse sea like a cold winter monsoon and has now reached American shores. Amon Amarth is a band from Tumba, Sweden founded in 1992 who are the latest”and most commercially successful”proponent of a genre known as Viking metal. As the name implies, bands from the Viking metal genre sing about important topics such as sailing, lusting for adventure and conquest, furious winds and treacherous seas. Viking metal bands are too busy metaphorically conquering and pillaging to worry about such trivialities as their feelings, let alone grooming themselves.

Amon Amarth took their name from a location in J.R.R. Tolkiens Middle Earth, and their name means Mount Doom in the Elvish language of Sindarin. Mount Doom would have been a decent name in itself, but its roots in Tolkiens sword and sorcery classic makes it all the better. Their first demo release, The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter, set the thematic tone for their work to come. Drawing musical inspiration from bands such as Bolt Thrower and their Viking metal predecessors Bathory and Enslaved, who in turn took their cue from the great American band Manowar, Amon Amarth plays their own unique style of melodic death metal. While they are hesitant to claim the Viking metal mantle for their own, they take most of their lyrical content from Viking history and Norse mythology.

The band signed with Metal Blade Records in 1998 and their popularity has skyrocketed worldwide. 2006s With Oden On Our Side earned the band headliner status in North American and has made them one of the most popular metal acts in the US.

Amon Amarth recently extended their deal with Metal Blade records, and released their latest album ‘Twilight of the Thunder God’ in September 2008. The album quickly became the best selling release of their career, and was met with critical acclaim from the heavy metal media worldwide.

Heavy metal as a genre is making a worldwide resurgence, particularly the Amon Amarth style of ‘Viking Metal’ and other related acts with a similar thematic focus on epic adventure. The band tours constantly, and their powerful live show has earned them a reputation as one of the ‘must see’ concert acts.

Piano Tips – Learn Piano Playing

Want To learn how to play the piano? It can be super easy to pick up if you use the right guide. You will be surprised at how fast you can learn the basics, and not only be playing chop-sticks but be playing more complicated compositions as well. Learning the piano isn’t very difficult, but you will have to get a firm grasp of the basics – like reading music.

Seems as though there are a lot of people who can play the piano but can’t read the music they are playing, you know they play from memory! Not good! Don’t be in such a hurry while learning to play, and spend some time learning how to read sheet music too. Just like when you’re typing you want to get to the point that you don’t even have to look at the piano keys while you play, you can just read your music and play right along. you’ll be able to play a new piece of music very quickly, using this approach.

Another little tip for beginner piano players is that not only do you need to be able to read your music as you play but you need to be reading ahead of the actual notes your playing. You stay ahead of yourself while playing so your rendition will flow smoothly. While this may be difficult at first, with a little practice you’ll be playing music you have never played before, and sound good doing it!

As you learn how to play the piano you will learn to play by ear, not only is this a very enjoyable way to play, but one that will help you learn how to play better, even with songs you don’t know well! The more you play and practice the better your overall playing well become. Also remember when playing to keep a light touch on the keys. If you are tense, and uptight (thinking about that next note!) then your playing will be negatively affected. So just relax, take you time, and enjoy the experience, because playing the piano, or any musical instrument is supposed to be fun…right?

One last tip for you, to help you play the best piano, you must learn your scales as well as your chords. All musicians from beginners to professionals need to know their scales and chords. The more you know about scales chords and reading music the more it will show in your playing, and your range. Do you ever aspire to write your own music? If so, and who wouldn’t, you will need a good grasp of chords, scales, and be able to read sheet music well. Do this and you will have a big advantage over many people just beginning to nurture their musical talents.

Axl Rose Brings ‘G n R’ Into The 21st Century With ‘Chinese Democracy’

The worst thing can be said about Chinese Democracy is that its not the wall to wall heavy metal onslaught suggested by the early release of the title track. On the other hand, it very well may be the best album of the year.

Once a rock band reaches a certain level of success, they just cant win. If they try to keep growing as artists by exploring different sounds, influences or whatever they’ll hear people whining about wanting things the way they used to be. A lot of purists hated it when KISS took off their makeup, but they deserved respect for doing something different and trying to forge a new artistic path. On the other hand, if a band *doesn’t* do anything new and keeps playing their old stuff in the same way ad nausium they’re branded as a nostalgia act. Think KISS now”Gene Simmons eventually made the calculated, slightly cynical decision that commerce trumped art. Hes now content with giving fans the best representation of the KISS that their nostalgic desires long for”to the extent of dressing a new guitarist and drummer up like Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Hes not breaking new ground as an artist, but he is backing a Brinks truck up to the Simmons household every night.

Axl Rose could have taken the same route with Guns n Roses. With all due respect to Duff McKegan, and the rest of the original band the casual fan thinks of vintage GnR as Axl and Slash anyway, so all he needed to do was make nice with the top hat wearing guitarist and the two of them and whatever supporting players they deemed necessary could have toured forever just like KISS. Pretend that its 1988 all over again, play the old songs in the old way and back up the Brinks Truck every night. To some extent, Slash has chosen this route with his band Velvet Revolver. Play similar blues based hard rock to vintage GnR, bring in former Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland on vocals and to the fans who are looking for a nostalgia fix of old Guns itll suffice. Never mind the fact that everything Velvet Revolver has ever recorded sounds the same, or that the band members are all well in their 40s and a little old to be doing the rock n roll gypsy routine of the late 1980s.

Axl refused to play the nostalgia game. Hes a very talented guy, but he doesn’t have much of a knack for self promotion or media spin. While he worked on putting together a new version of the band and recording Chinese Democracy he let a variety of interests”not the least of which were his old bandmates”control the media spin. For that reason, there are plenty of people including media and critics that have predisposed to hating this album before it was released or even having heard any of it.

In a lot of ways, ‘Chinese Democracy’ builds upon the variety and complexity of the two ‘Use Your Illusion’ albums. Like ‘Illusion’, the album grows and evolves with repeated listening.

On Chinese Democracy is definitely an album that lends itself to repeated listening. A great case in point is the song ‘Better’ It doesn’t really jump out on first listen, but may be the catchiest pop song since The Killers first album.

One of the real triumphs of Chinese Democracy is the difficulty that a listener has in pigeonholing the songs”with the overall observation that there’s a lot of the Elton John inspired piano stuff first heard on the Illusion albums its clear that the band is going in a new musical direction and one that is somewhat unpredictable but very exciting.

The only real liability of ‘Chinese Democracy’ is that a few songs have been watered down by overproduction”biggest case in point Madagascar which the band has been playing live for the better part of this decade. The album version doesn’t quite have the edge or raw emotion that was on display when played live.

Thats a very small complaint about what is overall an amazing album. Theres nothing nostalgic about ‘Chinese Democracy., just the sound of a great band breaking new ground.

Opera Glasses and Shear Madness: a Comedic Review

Chances are, you have heard of Shear Madness, perhaps from a friend, or relative, and are considering attending a performance. My recommendation is that you should not attend, unless you would like to feel physical pain, and suffering from extreme laughter. However if you feel like you cheek and stomach muscles are in healthy enough shape, you may be able to endure this marathon of laughter. Opera glasses are very necessary for a performance of this type.

The play begins in a unisex hair salon; there are many types of people at coming in and out of the salon. We see many stereotypes, we see the dumb blond, homosexual hair dresser (played by John McGivern in the performance I attended.), the police officers, a high class woman, and of course the traditional red hot hunk of a man, which makes John McGivern’s character giggle with delight. In this scene we get the first bits of comedy. All of the characters seem to be sharing the most well guarded secrets with the hairdressers; much like as is found in the real world.

This play is ever changing as the topics of interest revolve around current events going on around the city Shear Madness is open in and the United States hot topics. The current events are twisted into a funny light. The characters use a lot of improvisation and sometimes the actors cannot contain their own laughter which only makes you laugh even harder. To make sure you see each actor slip up trying hard not to giggle, bring your Opera glasses.

During the play, all of a sudden, one of the characters will speak to the audience and ask for your opinion. People shout out the answer. Answers vary and it adds an entire new dimension to the already hilarious play. Be careful if you sit in the front three rows as you may be spotted out as the butt of a witty joke. Do not worry; the jokes are funny yet silly.

Aside from the typical chit chat you find in a beauty parlor, Shear Madness’ plot turns to a murder mystery. The person who is killed is always the same; it is the owner of the parlor. The owner lived above the parlor prior to being murdered, and you will see that any of the characters potentially could have been the murderer. You will be working and trying to figure out who the murderer is; your opera glasses will help you to not miss any subtle hints.

What makes this comedy play different than any other play is that the guilty murderer is different each time. The characters in the play will talk to the audience and ask them questions. The audience actually votes and chooses who the murderer is. As odd as this may sound, it is really a very clever concept. Some people even see this play more than once and usually see a different ending.

Shear Madness is one of the longest running plays that are not musical. Popular critics such as the New York Times, Newsweek, Chicago Sun-Times, The Wall Street Journal and more have given Shear Madness rave reviews.

Remember when you attend, as always; bring your opera glasses, so as to not miss one single moment! Opera glasses will help you to make sure that you don’t miss one moment or a laugh.

Opera Glasses and the Phantom: A Review

Phantom of the Opera is a marvelous performance that will send your feelings through an array of emotions from sadness, happiness, to fright. When planning on attending a performance of the Phantom of the Opera make sure you bring your opera glasses.

The Phantom of the Opera takes place in Paris in the nineteenth century. Two new opera house owners take over a theater that is thought to be haunted by a phantom. The phantom is said to be a man named Erik, a construction worker who helped build the hall. In reality Erik is not a ghost but is someone who was severely disfigured from birth and wears a mask on half of face to conceal his disfigured face.

As time goes on the Phantom come to one of the performers; Christine, and tells her that her father who has passed away, has sent him from heaven to give her voice lessons. The Phantom begins to train her through the walls of her dressing room, as these take place over the course of time Christine becomes a remarkable singer, and takes the leading role in the opera.

As Christine is performing one night on stage, Christine faints, and a man in the audience comes to save her. This man Raoul, we find out is a childhood friend of Christine, and begins to fall in love with her. Raoul begins to attend her performances, gifting her with flowers, and visiting with her often.

Erik begins to become jealous of Raoul, and their relationship. Erik can no longer hold himself back from seeing Christine and meeting her in person. Of course, Erik is wearing his famous mask. Erik brings Christine to his area where he hides out and lives under the opera house.

Our heroine becomes angry and scared as she finds that Erik will not let her leave his world. After some argument Erik promises that he will release her after five days. He then gives Christine a tour of his lair, which is bizarre and twisted. Make sure you have your opera glasses at this point to make sure you don’t miss a think

Christine desires to see the man behind the mask, and wonders who he really could be. In an amazing duet she pulls the mask by surprise from his face. We recommend using your opera glasses at this point to see if you can catch a glimpse of the Phantom’s face. After this amazing pinnacle of the duet, Erik feels betrayed and angry and vows to never release Christine from his underground lair. The Phantom, simply loves Christine, and more than anything wants this true love to be returned.

The story moves on from this pinnacle point, but you will have to attend this play to truly appreciate the masterpiece that it is. The music will amaze you, the storyline astound you in this epic performance. This is a show you will want to see several times, and as always remember to bring your opera glasses to experience it to its fullest.

Opera Glasses, Love, Racism, and Hairspray: A Review

Hairspray the musical is set in Baltimore, Maryland the year is 1962. Our hero in the musical is is a young overweight girl named Tracy. Tracy has always dreamed of becoming a big star, if and when you attend this musical, make sure you have a front row seat, if you don’t you will want to be sure to bring your opera glasses, so as not to miss a moment of this fast-paced play.

Tracy hears on the television that The Corny Collins Show is having a dance contest and she excitedly wants to enter the contest. Her overweight mother frowns at the idea. (You may have heard actor John Travolta played this part in the movie Hairspray.) Tracy’s mother is just trying to protect her dear daughter out of love as she does not want people to make her daughter a joke for being overweight. Plus, her mother thinks the show plays racist music.

With the good grace of her father Wilbur, Tracy finally gets permission to go on to the dance audition. During the audition, she meets with, and falls in love with a boy name Link Larkin. As the author I recommend, preparing for this moment, by making sure that you are using your opera glasses! You will surely want to catch the expression on Tracy’s face as you see her fall hopelessly in love with Link. At this point, Tracy begins a beautiful song about love, and her dream of being with Link. Tracy is rudely awakened from her daydream, only to find out that due to her weight, she did not make the cut for the dance competition. Just as her mother suspected would happen from the beginning.

Poor Tracy then returns back to school. Her troubles do not end at school. Tracy is then given a detention once again due to her hair being so big that kids sitting behind her cannot even see the chalk board! Hence, you can tell a reason why the musical is given the name Hairspray.

While Tracy is in detention, she meets a nice black boy named Seaweed who is kind enough to teach Tracy some dance steps and hot moves. There is a dance party scheduled for the school and the owner of the Corny Collins Show, Corny Collins himself, sees Tracy’s slick moves. He loves how she dances and lo and behold she is chosen to be a dancer on his popular show. This moment will be the perfect time to put on your opera glasses as of course Tracy is ecstatic as this is her big dream!

Again after all this Tracy finds more good news, Link Larkin, the love of her life is to sing a romantic song to her on the show! Amber, who is another girl that attends Tracy’s school is also in love with Link, finds out, and decides to take her rage out on on Tracy, cruelty ensues, including knocking Tracy out with a volleyball.

As we continue with the play, Tracy is invited to record shop that Seaweed’s mother owns, all during the play, Tracy continues to grow close to Seaweed, and is upset to find out that the show that she is about to go on, only allows black people to attend their shows once a month, on “Negro Day” because of this Tracy finds herself fighting for black rights, and helping her best friend, the ending of Hairspray the musical is sure to please, but you will have to attend to find out.

Hairspray is a magnificent musical that you are sure to enjoy. To get the most out of your enjoyment bring your opera glasses.

Jeff Bridges has always loved the theater and opera, he currently helps run an opera glasses retail site where they sell opera glasses. Including Opera Glasses with handle, flashlight, chain and more!

Opera Glasses and Wicked: A Musical Review

Wicked is an amazing musical, and a storyline you are sure to love. The story is based off of the original movie of the 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz. Wicked is the story of how The Wicked Witch of the West got so wicked.

When going to the theater to see Wicked the musical you will want to have a pair of opera glasses. The costumes are so breathtaking that characters wear that you will not want to miss any of the detail. Glittery, silky, gorgeous material makes up the lovely gowns. The singing is outstanding. With your opera glasses you can watch the actors sing their hearts out up close and personal.

I love how you learn who the good witch, Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West truly are. You learn how they acted growing up. You find out how Glinda, (the good witch) really was.

In the performance of Wicked you find the story going to many twists and turns. As the play begins we begin to see the childhoods’ of both the Good Witch, and Wicked Witch. We see that Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) had a terrible upbringing, you find out that she was born with green skin, for which she was tormented constantly by those around her, you find that she was raised by her father, and had no mother to take care of her. Also you find that Glinda (the Good Witch) was born to a rich family, and as it turns out, was nothing more than a spoiled brat. At the end of the performance you attend, you are sure to be bombarded with opportunities to buy merchandise from the show, of all the things you are sure to be offered, I do recommend purchasing a CD of the music, as you will want to listen to it over and over again.

Wicked is one of the most popular musicals to come off Broadway in years, the story is unforgettable, and the music is sure to amaze. Wicked has won many awards for its music and theatrical performances. If after this review you still don’t believe me that it is a remarkable play, simply find someone you know who has seen it, ask them how they felt about it, and you will see what I mean. Opera glasses for this performance are absolutely necessary, so buy them if needed.

You know that Wicked is a masterpiece as this year of 2009 Wicked is on its second National United States tour. This musical is so popular box office records have occurred through and through. If you have not seen Wicked yet, you are missing a fantastic musical. I would highly recommending purchasing tickets as you will not be sorry. As mentioned above, do not forget your opera glasses.

Before you attend any performance make sure that you have a good pair of opera glasses. Here you can check out Opera Glasses with handle, flashlight, chain and more!
