There is a weird group of volcanic crags about 20 km north of Caboolture called The Glass House Mountains. The story of them is called the Weeping Mountain and his Wayward Son. It is an aboriginal legend that tells of the rocks being a family of Mountain Spirit’s.
It is said that the Mountain Spirits were reigned over by Tibrogargan, who is said to be the father of all tribes. His wife, Beerwah and he had children, of which Coonowrin was the oldest. He also had twin sibling, Tunbubudla and Coochin, as well as Ngngun, Tibberoowuccum, Miketeebumulgrai and Elimbah.
The tale is said that Tibrogargan was looking to the coast and saw that the sea level was rising. He was afraid because Beerwah was near the water. He was also worried about his children, but couldn’t save all of them. In this case, he called to Coonowrin, the eldest to help him mother. While Tibrogargan collected the rest of his children, he glanced back to see if Coonowrin had brought his mother to safety. Shockingly, Coonowrin had run away and left his mother. Tibrogargan was so angry that he picked up his club and hit Coonowrin, dislocating his neck.
Once the waters subsided, the family were able to return to their home .Upon seeing his crooked neck; Coonowrins siblings began to tease him. This made him feel ashamed and he went to his father for forgiveness. Tibrogargan wept huge tears of despair and asked his son how he could abandon his own mother.Coonowrin answered that she was so much bigger than any of them; he thought she should be able to take care of herself. What he did not know was the Beerwah was not just big but heavily pregnant.Coonowrins siblings began to weep too and their tears formed many streams some reaching all the way out to sea.
Because the law of the tribe said that he could not forgive his son, Tibrogargan had to turn his back forever on his eldest. Now, Coonowring hangs his crooked neck and cries while Tibrogargan faces away towards the water. Beerwah is still pregnant.
