The Motorists Guide to an Overheating Engine

The first indication that you will get that you car engine is overheating will usually be when the water temperature gauge starts to rise above its normal level and towards the red zone. This will normally be followed by an overheat warning light illuminating on the dashboard and may even be accompanied by steam rising from under the bonnet. It is important to stop if you have any of these warning signs, as continuing to drive on could cause severe and expensive damage to the engine.
If your vehicle is overheating you need to pull off the street and turn the vehicle off immediately. You do not want to continue to a mechanic garage or station as this will result in irreparable damage to the engine. The cylinder head when it gets too hot will warp or crack, thus replacement is needed in that situation.
Once safely parked on the side of the road, switch on your hazard lights to warn any following drivers of your problem. Providing that there is no fire present you can open the bonnet, to give the engine a chance to cool down, however do not be tempted to touch any of the engine parts at this point, as it is very likely that you will be burnt.
It can take a significant amount of time for the engine to cool down, so you should be prepared for a long wait. If the car overheats during the night hours make sure your sidelights are lit and that you turn the headlights on so you can see what you are doing around the engine.
Once the engine has cooled down you will probably need to top up the coolant level. In an emergency it is fine to use ordinary water but make sure it is not too cold or it could crack the plastic water reservoir. If you need to add a lot of water to your coolant it will significantly dilute the concentration of the antifreeze within it, and this will eventually need to be remedied by a qualified mechanic to prevent the coolant freezing during the winter.
Even if the engine has cooled down the coolant may still be hot and undoing the coolant filler cap can release scolding hot steam onto your hand. Therefore wait until the radiator is cool enough to touch before opening the coolant filler cap and cover your hand with a rag for added protection.
Reaching out at arms length to fill the container will help stop you from being hit with hot coolant. You will want to stop and check the levels of the reservoir to ensure you are not over filling it. There is a maximum and minimum line on the container. You will need to check that the temperature gauge is back to normal levels before driving again.
It is safe to drive if the coolant was the issue; however there could be another issue which has caused the engine to overheat. You will want to avoid long trips until you can get the car into the garage. If the engine gets hot shortly after you begin to drive again, pull over and call for roadside recovery to tow your vehicle to a garage.

Safe Driving Tips: How to Use ABS Braking Effectively

A good driver is always constantly critically observing the road ahead and using their skill to anticipate the effect of any potential hazards on their progress, and reacting accordingly before the need to brake sharply. However the unexpected can still happen and knowing how to brake safely in an emergency will ensure you stop safely and remain in full control of your vehicle.

ABS establishes a situation in which the wheels will continue to revolve, without locking up, when heavy braking is needed. It allows steering to remain in your control, the tyres to grip the road, and you to avoid any danger.
The effect of ABS can normally be felt as a gentle pulsing through the brake pedal or by a distinct grinding sound. Its important that if you hear or feel these signs that you do not lift of the brake, but instead continual the heavy braking to ensure you stop in the shortest distance whilst making maximum use of the ABS.
ABS is a most effective system for heavy or emergency braking. It makes sure you can brake in a safe and controlled manner. You must realise that it cannot defy physics, which means driving to quickly on wet roads can lead to accidents even with ABS.

Rules For Driving A Minibus In The UK

Introduction Minibuses are great for transporting a party of friends, family, or a sports team. They seat up between 9 and 16 passengers – not including the driver and provide a great way of getting small groups of people from A to B. To drive a minibus in the UK you must own a driving license with a D1 entitlement. These used to be issued onto licenses automatically but in 1997 the conditions changed:
If you had entitlement to drive cars prior to 1st January 1997 you can drive a minibus provided it has a no more then a maximum of up to 17 seats including the driver’s seat and is not being used for hire or reward. Your minibus entitlement will remain valid in the UK until your license is next renewed.
Meeting higher medical standards When your licence is renewed, the minibus entitlement can only be issued if you make a special application. This special application will require meeting a new higher medical standard. Providing your minibus entitlement is renewed, at the age of 70, you will normally be granted a licence for a maximum of three years that will allow you to drive a minibus although NOT for hire or reward. If your minibus entitlement is not renewed, the entitlement will no longer appear on your licence.
Driving a minibus under the permit scheme In order to drive any minibus that has nine or more passenger seats for hire or reward you will normally need a passenger carrying vehicle (PCV) entitlement. There are some exceptions (see below). To obtain this will mean meeting much higher medical standards and take a further driving test. However, if you drive a minibus for an organisation under the minibus or community bus permit scheme you will not need to have the higher PCV entitlements. Should your license does not include a D1 entitlement then you may still be entitled to drive a minibus under certain conditions.
You are allowed to drive a minibus with up to 16 passengers if: i) you drive on behalf of a non commercial body for social purposes but not for hire or payment, unless operating under a permit; ii) you are aged 21and over; iii) you have possessed a car (category B) license for at least 2 years; iv) you are providing your service on a voluntary basis; v) the minibus maximum weight is not more than 3.5 tonnes excluding any specialist equipment for the carriage of disabled passengers. Minibuses up to 4.25 tonnes will be permitted in certain circumstances. vi) if you are 70 years old and over, you are able to meet the health requirements for driving a vehicle (i.e. minibus) which comes within the D1 class; If you meet these requirements there are two further rules you must act in accordance with: you may not receive any payment you must not tow a trailer (of any size).
Any commercial companies operating in the UK MUST be licensed and registered by VOSA. Hire or reward means any payment in cash or kind made by or on behalf of the passengers that give them the right to be carried in a vehicle.
