Is it safe to buy tours in Cancun from street vendors?

Ive been walking around in the Hotel District and quite a few people have approached me regarding tours. They say they can get them much cheaper than the hotel can, and im wondering if its safe to buy them. Will the tour company accept the voucher? Are these people trustworthy?
Any help/advice from someone who has done this before would be really great!

dont! just do it through hotel!

It’s a good way to lose your money. I’m sure there are some that are legitimate, but there is no way of knowing. Those that actually do tours privately don’t carry insurance, so if you get injured, you are on your own. If you book through your resort, you will have an air conditioned bus, an english speaking guide, and in most cases where the tour lasts for a few hours, you will be given lunch at a nice cafe or restaurant. Don’t be cheep. Your there to enjoy yourself, not to save money.

I have never heard of anybody being swindled for an activity ticket. These guys make a small commission on the sale.
To make false tickets would require enlisting 3 or 4 people and a lithograph and a string of vendors. Not practical, the cops would be all over them and they would be portrayed and paraded in front of the media. All the equipment would be seized and the fine would be right through the roof. No fine money…off to la Bote.

They can be trusted. If the ticket looks genuine , it is.
Despite the bad headlines there are millions of good, honest, hard working Mexicans that can be trusted.
If the guys clothes are all worn out and he is covered with tattoes then……

I guess most of them are trustworthy, I bought my tour like this. But my suggestion is that you don’t pay them until the day your leaving on tour. They usually go out from a small mall in hotel zone. Book your tour and say you will pay the day you are leaving, this way if there is a lie you will only loose a little bit of time, but no money.

But check out, they are not necessaryly cheaper than the ones from the hotels….

    Good luck!
