Port Douglas, once a little fishing village, has now become the center of life. It is a great place to enjoy wonderful restaurants, cafes and bars.

On Macrossan Street you will find the village shops, restaurants and bars. It is a street beautifully lined with many, original, 19th century buildings as well as newer builder that architecturally blend nicely.

After the cyclone, in 1911, the port population went down to only 500. It began to raise again, many years later due to the construction of the Sheraton Mirage Resort , built in 1980s. The Sheraton brought in the tourists and begin of an increase in restaurants and accommodation.

There is a beautiful beach, Four Mile Beach T the end of Macrossan Street and this has the added bonus of being lined by Palm trees and also has a Stinger Net in the sea, ensuring you can safely swim all year round without getting a jellyfish sting. At the other end of the street is a beautiful Marina, where the Sheraton is based. On the beach there are a wide range of activities on offer, including parasailing, have a helicopter ride, go to Dive School, or just relax. It provides you with the opportunity to but locally hand made arts and crafts of every description. In 1998, the council decreed this market to be a Cotters Market, thereby ensuring that the goods on offer for sale are made only by the stall holder of their immediate family making it a wonderfully unique place to shop.
